HOW TO CHOOSE EXTERIOR PAINT COLOR FOR YOUR HOME Madison Ct

The exterior color of your home is an expression of your personal style! Painting or staining your home is also the best way to protect your siding and trim from the elements.   How long a paint or stain job can protect your home totally depends on the quality of materials and how the materials are applied to the siding and trim.  We wrote this article HOW TO CHOOSE EXTERIOR PAINT COLOR FOR YOUR HOME Madison Ct  to help you with this.

There are some great LOW-VOC exterior stains and paints now available using new technology that stands the test of time and elements better then the brands that have been on the market for years! There is Aura exterior paint, Arborcoat waterborne exterior stain to name a few.

A few things to consider when picking an outside color:

1. Your driveway, the chimney and the roof should play a role in deciding a color. If you choose a color that has similar shades in the roof, chimney and driveway, it will add harmony to the entire property, and also give a feeling of spaciousness.

2. If you have stone work on the house or a stone fence, using a color that blends with the stone work will give a sense on continuity and beauty.

3. If your home is in the west coast where there are a lot of terra-cotta roofs, picking a soft neutral color will help even out the intense color of the terra-cotta and bring more visual harmony to the entire look and a softness.

4. If you belong in a community or houses that are close together, you might consider choosing a color palate that is compatible with the homes in your neighborhood.  The color does not need to be the same, just a color that goes with the general scheme in your area.

5.  Landscaping also has an impact on the overall look.  If you have a brilliant display of colors around the yard, you might go with a soft color to offset the beautiful intensity of the garden, or if you have a subdued garden, you can choose a louder house color!

6. I would encourage you to choose a white or very very light color for the trim.  Choosing a trim color that is different from the siding color can be tricky.  It can make your home look smaller and also force your eyes to just see the trim and not the entire home.

7. Use the doors as another way to add a pop of color to your home. It’s not such a big amount of color that it overtakes your home, it’s just enough to add a little fun and kick!

If you are meeting with a contractor, they should be able to give helpful tips.  It’s also a good idea to go to your local paint center and get a bunch of color choices and put them on the house so you can see the color throughout the day as the light changes.

WHY USE NON-TOXIC PAINTS?

First, the bad news:
Indoor air is three times more polluted than outdoor air!  According to the EPA our indoor air is listed as one of the top 5 hazards to our health!  A good start to reduce the level of pollution in our indoor air is the type of paint that you have on your walls, doors and trim.
Painting products and finishes are among the leading causes of indoor air pollution!   After you have painted your home, the paints and the finishes continue to release low level toxic emissions into your breathing air for years after the application!  The source of these toxins is VOC’s (Variety of volitile organic compounds) which until recently were essential to the performance of paint.
Now, the good news!
Painting manufactures have caught on and there are many brands out there that offer No Voc based paint.
Benjamin Moore has Pristine Eco Spec and Sherwin Williams has Harmony. These are just a few, if you have a favorite paint brand that you are used to using, chances are they offer a No Voc line of paint and finishes!  These brands are high quality, better for your health and cost effective!
Remember to open a few windows and doors at the end of the day if you have been painting, even for a few minutes will help freshen the air!

What’s the secret to transforming cookie-cutter into your custom style?  When it comes to your home, light carpentry that adds built-in architectural details make all the difference.  To turn drab into dazzling – and boost your home’s value in the process – try adding one of these exciting accents:

  1. Window Seats. Window seats are beautiful architectural features, and add immense style, comfort, and value to your home.  Maximize your storage potential by creating a hinged bench seat, or consider building storage cubbies beneath.  Pull it together with cushions that match your room’s décor.
  2. Media Shelving. Utilize awkward spaces (and add to the charm of your home) by adding shelves under stair cases, around landings, next to fireplaces, or even under kitchen cabinets.  Such spaces are perfect for organizing and storing books, DVDs, cds, mobile device charging stations and all the necessities of today’s digital age.
  3. Crown Moulding. Add a classic dimension of elegance and warmth to any room with crown moulding.  But DIYers beware: Installing crown moulding can be tricky, particularly when it comes to the cornices.  As always, simple is better.
  4. Bead Board. Bead board is a mainstay in many old houses, lending a classic yet casual look to cabinets, ceilings and decorative wall panels.  With an informal flair, bead board can help you incorporate relaxed cottage styling into any decor.
  5. Flower Boxes. Give your home a floral facelift with a fun flower box!  Painted to match your home’s exterior (or the blooms within), built-in flower boxes will give your home a decorative seasonal boost the whole year through.

5 Biggest “Don’ts” When Choosing an Exterior Color

Over the years, hundreds of homeowners have asked us for advice when it comes to selecting a color for their home’s exterior.  And since the right color combination for any home depends upon a variety of factors – like architectural style, location, and personal taste – we thought we’d compile our expert’s list of what not to do.  Here goes:

1) Don’t feel bound by tradition.

If you have an older home, feel free to honor the past with an historically accurate color scheme.  But don’t be afraid to upend tradition with exciting results – like using a bold blue or bubblegum pink to dramatize architectural details.  Savvy homeowners in trendy (and even not-so-trendy) neighborhoods know that skillful color usage can disguise design flaws and even boost the overall curb appeal of their home.

2)  Don’t ignore your neighbors.

Strategic color usage can add curb appeal and value (see #1 above), but not if your house becomes the laughingstock of the neighborhood.  A good rule of thumb?  Choose colors that set your house apart, without clashing with nearby buildings.  Likewise, let the house next door give you paint color ideas, but don’t copy your neighbor exactly.

3)  Don’t work against your home’s existing assets.

Every home has some features that won’t be painted, like brick walls, vinyl windows or a natural wooden door.  That said, choose a color scheme that harmonizes with colors already present on your house.

4)  Don’t mess with the laws of physics.

For those of you who missed it in high school science class, Michel Eugene Chevreul invented a 72-part color circle that essentially maps how the brain interprets color.  Taken together with theories on perspective developed by Leonardo DaVinci, Chevreul’s work determined that dark colors seem to shrink objects, while light colors seem to expand them.  The lesson for homeowners?  To make your house seem bigger, stick with lighter exterior hues.

5)  Don’t forget: Less is more.

Even on the most ornate of gingerbread Victorians, using too many colors in your exterior palette can totally overwhelm your house (along with anyone passing by).  Strike a balance by sticking to no more than 3 or 4 complementary shades.

3 Tasty Tints to Bring Out the Beauty of Your Home

Looking to spice up your home with today’s hottest hues?  Glance no farther than your kitchen.  No matter what your decor, these 3 delectable colors will have you salivating in style!

Apple Green

Apple green walls add a playful contrast to homes featuring hardwood floors and natural stone elements (a fireplace, for instance, or granite countertops).  For a truly luscious effect, pair apple green walls with tangerine trim and accent with lemon yellow.  Likewise, add some bite to your apple-inspired decor with apple branches in an urn and a bowl of apples on the table.

Mustard Yellow

French country comforts earn eye-popping pizzazz when you mix mustard yellow walls with turquoise trim and bold red accents.  For a deliciously dazzling effect, boost your mustard yellow backdrop with eclectic furnishings and water-themed paintings to satiate your innermost Mediterranean muse.

Tapioca Cream

A sophisticated alternative to plain vanilla white or beige, tapioca cream lends character and depth to rooms decorated with vintage furnishings and bold lines alike.  In the living room, tapioca walls paired with lavender trim create a luscious teatime retreat; in the kitchen, white cupboards pop against this flavorful hue’s understated elegance.
