Are you getting tired of the same old same old around the house? Changing up your décor and atmosphere can be really easy when you pick up the paint brush. Plus, it only takes three simple steps – deciding what to paint, finding the right color, and, finally, painting! If you’re ready to change up your style a bit, read along for five of the best ways to refresh your room with new house paint.

1. Accent Walls Have you been surrounded by the same neutral walls for the past ten years? Yikes – it may be time to add an accent wall somewhere. To choose the right color, look at the decorations around the room to see what colors you really want to pull together. Then, determine the lighting in the room to see what shade of color would work best in the desired area. Test out some of your choices and you’ll soon be ready to paint!

2. Flooring Did you know you can paint your flooring for a whole new look? Whether you have tile, laminate, wood, or concrete – your floors could potentially benefit from a new coat of paint. Unless you have carpet, paint mixed with carpet is not something you want to have to deal with.

3. Stripes Designs like stripes are a great way to add a flare to the room. The nice thing about stripes is they can be used universally – meaning, they’re not just for a kid’s room nor are they just for an adult’s area, either. Some designs can be pretty age-specific, but stripes can be incorporated in almost every room.

4. Tile If you have a lot of outdated tile around your bathroom, you can add a fresh look with a simple coat of paint. Say goodbye to those bright pink bathroom tiles from the 50’s! The best thing about this is the endless varieties of color that you have to choose from. You’re no longer stuck installing new tile for a new look – just use some paint!

5. Textures Textures are just one of the finishes you can add to your walls to change it up a bit! There are hundreds of different texture options you can choose from depending on the feel you’re going for. If you want to look into different finishes; try metallic colors or glaze to bring a really unique feel to your atmosphere.

6. Use Different Tones We saved the best for last – layering your paint colors on the same wall. One of our favorite ways to really change up your current style is by breaking your paint color into two. One covers the top half of your wall, while a molding breaks apart the color covering the bottom half of your wall. You can choose different shades of the same color here, which are guaranteed to go together – or, you can choose an entirely different color to really stand out. So, what will it be? Are you ready for a change? Go ahead and pull out the paint brushes – it’s time for some refreshing!

Painting With Deep Toned Colors Madison Ct

Deep toned colors are very popular and we get a lot of calls about using dark toned colors.  That’s why we created this blog Painting With Deep Toned Colors Madison Ct.

The most important thing is the prep work when dealing with dark toned colors! Make sure you tape off and protect areas that are not being painted.

You need to properly prepare the surfaces.  Make sure all nail pops are taken care of, any dents, dings or any kind of surface interruption is taken care of so you have a smooth surface to put the paint on.

You may need to do more then two coats.  You need to properly cut in.  These are the simple things that you do that make a difference in a beautiful paint job!

Another important aspect is the effect of color on your mood!  Pastels are cool tones, that can relax and soothe, and make a room appear bigger then it is.   The other group is warm tones, that create a cozy warm atmosphere, they cal also make a room appear smaller.

Do some research on colors and the mood it can create in us.  There are tons of articles on the internet!

If you have any questions or want some advice, please feel free to call us! We are happy to talk with you even if you don’t hire us!  We also offer free professional estimates!

PICKING A PAINTER GUILFORD CT

I am writing this article PICKING A PAINTER GUILFORD CT to help give you some guidelines on what to look for in a painter!  Here are a few basics:

1. Make sure they are fully insured with workers compensation insurance 2. Liability insurance 3. commercial auto insurance

2. They must be licensed in the state of Connecticut through the Department of Consumer Protection.  You can go on their website to look up a company name to make sure they hold a current license. They are also suppose to carry a small wallet size card from the state with their license name and number on it.

3.  They must have a lead license.  There are no exceptions to this, this is a serious safety issue!

4. Get a few references, ask where they buy their paint, you can call the paint store to check them out as well!

5. How long have they been in business? This is important!  Will they be around if you need to call them a year down the road?

Another important consideration is time.  How long did it take for them to return your call for an estimate?  How long does it take to get a fully written detailed estimate from them after they meet with you?  The state has guidelines that contractors must follow in their estimates.  They must specify the dollar value of course, and also when they will start the job and how long it will take.  They need their license number on the estimate.  Do they have an office?  Do they have a website that gives you more information about their company?  How about a cell phone number and email?    Some things are not required by the state like a website, but it shows their professionalism and effort to make sure it’s easy to reach them and to give you valuable informaton!  Our website has a blog that we add to everyday with informative articles to educate you about different topics.  We paint houses in Guilford Ct and Madison Ct as well as other neighboring towns!

I hope that this article PICKING A PAINTER GUILFORD CT was helpful!  If you have any questions please contact us by phone or email!  We are happy to talk to you!dave's photo

ROOF CLEANING TIPS, GUILFORD CT

In this article ROOF CLEANING TIPS, Guilford Ct, we will show you a few steps to take to have a nice clean roof!  Be sure to be very careful on the roof and have good shoes on for better safety.

Your main tool is a power washer.  You can rent one by the day at most rental centers – this will help make the job go faster and more efficient!  The power from a pressure washer can cause unwanted damage to your roof, so be sure to select a tip that has medium pressure.  You can adjust easier starting with a medium tip, you can change tips to increase or decrease the pressure.  Be sure to make sure you have solid footing and you are always standing on a dry part of the roof, a wet roof can be slippery.

Stand at the highest point of the roof, keep the pressure washed aimed down the roof, keep the tip a little distance from the roof surface, about a foot and half to two feet.  Note:  Do not aim the power washer up the roof, this causes water to get pushed under the shingles causing leaks into your home!  So, always always point down!  As get going, clean a few shingles at a time, take your time.  Make sure all the shingles stay securely attached as you move on.

Note:  If you have a roof that is covered in mildew, dirt or moss you can pre-treat the roof by spraying on some cleanser first and then power washing it off.

I hope this article ROOF CLEANING TIPS GUILFORD CT was helpful!  Please feel free to call us if  you have some questions before you clean your roof.  If you would like us to come out and give you a free professional evaluation or estimate we are happy to do so! We are located in Guilford Ct between Branford Ct and Madison Ct.

HOW TO CHOOSE EXTERIOR PAINT COLOR FOR YOUR HOME Madison Ct

The exterior color of your home is an expression of your personal style! Painting or staining your home is also the best way to protect your siding and trim from the elements.   How long a paint or stain job can protect your home totally depends on the quality of materials and how the materials are applied to the siding and trim.  We wrote this article HOW TO CHOOSE EXTERIOR PAINT COLOR FOR YOUR HOME Madison Ct  to help you with this.

There are some great LOW-VOC exterior stains and paints now available using new technology that stands the test of time and elements better then the brands that have been on the market for years! There is Aura exterior paint, Arborcoat waterborne exterior stain to name a few.

A few things to consider when picking an outside color:

1. Your driveway, the chimney and the roof should play a role in deciding a color. If you choose a color that has similar shades in the roof, chimney and driveway, it will add harmony to the entire property, and also give a feeling of spaciousness.

2. If you have stone work on the house or a stone fence, using a color that blends with the stone work will give a sense on continuity and beauty.

3. If your home is in the west coast where there are a lot of terra-cotta roofs, picking a soft neutral color will help even out the intense color of the terra-cotta and bring more visual harmony to the entire look and a softness.

4. If you belong in a community or houses that are close together, you might consider choosing a color palate that is compatible with the homes in your neighborhood.  The color does not need to be the same, just a color that goes with the general scheme in your area.

5.  Landscaping also has an impact on the overall look.  If you have a brilliant display of colors around the yard, you might go with a soft color to offset the beautiful intensity of the garden, or if you have a subdued garden, you can choose a louder house color!

6. I would encourage you to choose a white or very very light color for the trim.  Choosing a trim color that is different from the siding color can be tricky.  It can make your home look smaller and also force your eyes to just see the trim and not the entire home.

7. Use the doors as another way to add a pop of color to your home. It’s not such a big amount of color that it overtakes your home, it’s just enough to add a little fun and kick!

If you are meeting with a contractor, they should be able to give helpful tips.  It’s also a good idea to go to your local paint center and get a bunch of color choices and put them on the house so you can see the color throughout the day as the light changes.

If you would like any further help or have questions, please call us! We are happy to answer any questions you have, recommend a good paint store and products! We can also meet you at your home to help you or give a free professional estimate and home evaluation, such as how to prep your home, if you need carpentry repair first…

How To Find Paint Supplies Guilford Ct

With so many different brands and stores carrying paint supplies it can be overwhelming trying to find the perfect store that offers a good variety at a great value, so we created this article  “How To Find Paint Supplies Guilford Ct” to help with that.

We have been painting contractors for 37 years and have tried practically everything!  If you live in the Connecticut area, I would suggest you try Rings End, they have many locations spread out over Connecticut. Why?  I have been dealing with them for over six years and just to start, the customer service is outstanding!  They also offer the Benjamin Moore line.  The Benjamin Moore line offers the widest variety of paints from the highest quality to contractors grade, and I have to tell you that all the lines are fantastic!

Coronado is one of their newer lines and its a little more economical and high quality!  If you would like a no VOC paint, which I highly reccomend,  try Natura, it’s great!

If you don’t live in the Connecticut area and can’t get to a Rings End, then I suggest locating the largest paint chain in your state and starting there.  The big box retailers like Home Depot do have a nice paint department, but you will not get the same customer service and advice that you will from a smaller and well stocked paint store that only sells paint!

I hope that this article “How To Find Paint Supplies Guilford Ct” was helpful!  Please feel free to call or email us with any questions you may have or for advice on products, we are happy to help you!  Of course if you live in the Connecticut area and would like us to come out to meet with you for a free professional evaluation and estimate of your painting needs we are happy to do so!

Thank you!

What Is No VOC paint in Guilford Ct

First, what are VOCs  in paint? They are Volatile Organic Compounds in house paint.  VOCs are solvents that release into the air for years after the paint is applied, heavily when the paint is drying but VOCs  keep releasing for years after the paint dries.

This article called” What is no Voc paint in Guilford” is intended to give you some information on what VOCs are.  You can also find VOCs in products other then paint, such as home cleansers, glues, adhesives.  Some symptoms of breathing VOCs are headaches and dizziness.   Here is a link to a list of common household products that have VOCs  http://www.health.ny.gov/environmental/indoors/voc.htm

VOC or Volatile Organic Compounds are actually chemicals that manufactures use when making house paint, interior home furnishings, personal care products and also in common household cleansers.   The word “Volatile”  means that these chemicals evaporate and infiltrate the air we breathe at just room temperature!  The term “Organic” means that these chemicals are Carbon based, and the phrase “Chemical emissions” refers to VOC’s that evaporate into the air we breathe from these products.

The good news is that major paint manufactures are getting on board and creating paint products with No VOC’s! They recognize that people are very aware of what they buy and are choosing the healthiest product possible!

Major paint companies now produce a line of paint that has no VOCs in it, such as Benjamin Moore’s “Natura” or Behr “Premium”  and Sherwin Williams offers “Harmony”

5 Biggest “Don’ts” When Choosing an Exterior Color

exterior painting new haven county fairfield county House painting risks and rewards

Over the years, hundreds of homeowners have asked us for advice when it comes to selecting a color for their home’s exterior.  And since the right color combination for any home depends upon a variety of factors – like architectural style, location, and personal taste – we thought we’d compile our expert’s list of what not to do.  Here goes:

1) Don’t feel bound by tradition.

If you have an older home, feel free to honor the past with an historically accurate color scheme.  But don’t be afraid to upend tradition with exciting results – like using a bold blue or bubblegum pink to dramatize architectural details.  Savvy homeowners in trendy (and even not-so-trendy) neighborhoods know that skillful color usage can disguise design flaws and even boost the overall curb appeal of their home.

2)  Don’t ignore your neighbors.

Strategic color usage can add curb appeal and value (see #1 above), but not if your house becomes the laughingstock of the neighborhood.  A good rule of thumb?  Choose colors that set your house apart, without clashing with nearby buildings.  Likewise, let the house next door give you paint color ideas, but don’t copy your neighbor exactly.

3)  Don’t work against your home’s existing assets.

Every home has some features that won’t be painted, like brick walls, vinyl windows or a natural wooden door.  That said, choose a color scheme that harmonizes with colors already present on your house.

4)  Don’t mess with the laws of physics.

For those of you who missed it in high school science class, Michel Eugene Chevreul invented a 72-part color circle that essentially maps how the brain interprets color.  Taken together with theories on perspective developed by Leonardo DaVinci, Chevreul’s work determined that dark colors seem to shrink objects, while light colors seem to expand them.  The lesson for homeowners?  To make your house seem bigger, stick with lighter exterior hues.

5)  Don’t forget: Less is more.

Even on the most ornate of gingerbread Victorians, using too many colors in your exterior palette can totally overwhelm your house (along with anyone passing by).  Strike a balance by sticking to no more than 3 or 4 complementary shades.

One final tip?  Contact Coastline Painters today for more great color guidance.  We’re ready to help you create the home of your dreams.
