3 Tips for Choosing the Right Paint Color for Your Home’s Exterior

choosing the right paint color for the outside of your home

Tips for Choosing the Right Colors for Your Home Exterior Paint Job

Choosing the right color for your home exterior paint job should not be made without careful thought and consideration.  You will have to live with the colors you choose for your exterior paint job for a long time. In most houses, the average life span of exterior paints lasts for eight years or more dependent on the type of paint used and the color chosen.

Choosing one color is something that would be very difficult for homeowners to compromise on especially when it comes to painting the outside of your home.  This is why when it comes to choosing the color for your home’s exterior you need to practice due diligence and place lots of thought into the decision.

Take Note of the Feel and Look of Your Neighborhood

As far as the color is concerned, you need to take into consideration the color scheme of your neighborhood. Choose one color that will compliment the outside of your home as well as your neighborhood. Dark and bright colors are more likely to fade quicker.  With that consideration, bright paint colors are known to be more cheerful and will definitely make your house more appealing and easier to look at.  On the other hand, dark colors will make it so that the wear and tear of winter doesn’t show as much on the exterior of your home.

Even if you’ve become comfortable with the color of your home’s exterior, choosing new colors could be an exciting and refreshing change.  A new paint job can have a positive emotional impact on you and your family.

Look for contrasting or coordinating colors for your trim. The contrasting or coordinating color can also be added to your home’s porches, garage, shutters and even exterior doors.  This will give your home more depth.

Make Note of the Details of the Exterior of Your Home

Walk around your home’s exterior and make note of the different features of the outside of your home. Try to take a look at the stone, roof, brick, mortar of your home. This is where you can start choosing the right color for your home’s exterior paint job.

Exterior Paint Considerations for your homeThe color that you’re going to choose is primarily dictated by the colors which are already present in your home’s exterior. This is often overlooked by homeowners. Don’t make the same mistake that many homeowners make when choosing colors for the exterior of your home. Homeowners see another house that looks good with a certain color and think it will look good on their own home.  The best thing you can do to beautify the exterior of your home is to choose colors that compliment the already existing mood and color scheme.

Don’t Rely on One Paint Chip Test

The same as your home’s interior paint, exterior paint color shades may differ from the paint chip you bring home from the paint store. Since painting the exterior of your home is a much bigger undertaking than painting a bedroom it is best to hire a professional home painter to go over all the color options with.

Most hardware stores carry swatches of colors in different shades and they may look good in the store but it’s important to consider your home’s surroundings, what it looks like during different seasons, and what your neighborhood looks like.   These are all things a professional home paint contractor can walk you through when it comes time to choose the right color.

The color is not the only consideration.  You are also going to need to determine what kind of prep work is involved based on the existing paint and material on the exterior of your home, and what paint is best for your home.

These are just a few pointers when it comes to choosing the right color of paint for the exterior of your home.  It’s always best to consult an expert home painter before making the final decision.  There are many things to consider when selecting the color and type of paint as well as materials for prepping your home.  The right paint decision will have your house looking spectacular for years to come.

Best Time To Paint Exterior of Your Home, Madison Ct

Best Time To Paint Exterior of Your Home! Many people think that the best time to paint the exterior of your home is summer or spring, but really the fall months are very ideal for house painting!  In the summer months it can get very humid which causes paint to dry longer, especially if it’s oil which takes a lot longer. We are house painters in Guilford Ct and used to the many different temperature swings in the New England area. First painting your home is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to increase the value of your home!

When you paint your home in the fall you still have plenty of good weather to take advantage of! Sometimes its easier to do this valuable project in the fall due to the fact that things seem to be a little calmer around the home.  When you have a house painter on the premesis he usually will have a house painting crew with him.  When a good house painter from a reputable house painting company sets up the shop on your property, it can take up a little space.  If you decide to paint the exterior of your home in the fall, the kids are back in school and not around the house during the day, this makes it easier on the kids and family when house painters are working. In the fall, the weather is less humid which helps with drying time, and now with all the new high quality paints being able to sustain colder temperatures its a matter of researching the paint brand for the specifications and seeing the temp range.  Mostly it’s a good idea to stay above 40 Degrees in outside temp but you can go a little colder and do great.  There are a few things to watch for, the house painter you hire will want to make sure that the house surface is dry from any dew in the morning, this might mean a little later start, between 9:00-9:30 or a little later depending on where you live instead of the usual 7:30-8:00 am start, this gives more valuable time for drying.   After the paint or stain is applied in temperature’s at 40 degrees or above it is important that the temperature stay at 40 degrees or above for the next 3 hours so that the drying process is good.  Also, at night it’s important that the temperature does not drop below freezing the first night because curing paint can still have some moisture in it and it can crystallize in sub-freezing temperatures at night.  Please know that you won’t be aware of a problem until spring or summer months if this does happen because moisture can stay trapped under the wood, and in the warmer temps find it’s way out, which means bubbling paint!  So, if your house painter adhere’s to these guidelines,  you can have a fantastic paint job in the fall months! Sometimes you can get a little better value if you wait until the fall, a house painter is very busy in the warmer months and may be looking to fill a few gaps in the fall schedule and you can get a better deal!  We are house painters / painting contractors in Guilford Ct and we also serve the Madison Ct, Old Saybrook Ct, Westbrook Ct, Branford Ct areas and are happy to visit your home for a free professional evaluation or if you are not near us, please feel free to call us with any questions, we are so happy to help you! How A Great Painting Job Gets Done Part 1, Madison Ct

It’s one thing to sort through estimates and find the price that fits your budget, but an important factor to getting a great painting job is in the prep work! This is why I created this article “How Great Painting Gets Done, Madison Ct. I  understand that price is important but what good is it to go by price alone if you don’t get a high quality paint job?  It’s like that old saying “Buy for price, buy twice”!  But, you don’t have to worry about that!

https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=j8K3gV_FNZ4

Here are a few things to look for in an estimate:

-Make sure they are licensed with the state of Ct

-Make sure they have a lead license

In the estimate, make sure that they detail all the prep work that will get done, like, replace rotted wood.  Scrape and sand. Use a high quality primer, make sure a high quality paint product like Benjamin Moore is used.  Proper putty and caulking should be done.

There should be a clean looking crew that shows up on time and is neat and conscientious.

Without good prep work nothing else matters, it won’t look like a high quality job.

Please feel free to call us at Coastline Painters LLC at 203-458-2073 with any questions, we are happy to talk with you.  I can also come out and give you a free professional home evaluation!

How To Prepare A House For Painting, Guilford Ct

The most important part of a paint/stain job is the prep work!  This is a quick blog about how to do this, and I have a link to my video talking about it also.

The first thing you do is power wash the house to remove dirt, mildew, loose paint.  You can rent a power washer for a day and use a eco-friendly solution, just check your local paint store for products to choose from.

Next you want to scrape and sand the siding and trim.  Take your time doing this and be thorough.  After this, you can apply one full coat of high quality primer or you can spot prime in the areas that need it.

Caulk any gaps and holes.

The last thing is to get a high quality product like Benjamin Moore paints and stains and carefully apply two coats.

Here is the link to my video:

I hope this helped, if you need any further advice or help please feel free to call us at (203) 458-2073.  We can also come out and give you a professional evaluation and estimate for your painting needs!dave's photo

Anyone Can Be A Painter, But Not A Professional Painter, Branford Ct

Everyone tries their hand at painting at some point in their life.  The difference between a homeowner painting a room and a professional painter is experience.  This is why I created this article Anyone Can Be A Painter, But Not A Professional Painter, Branford Ct.  Experience is the difference between an “ok” job and a fantastic job!

Your home is one of the biggest, if not biggest financial investment you make in your lifetime. It’s important that you take good care of it.  It takes years to perfect a professional painting job!  One of the biggest concerns is lead.  Homes built before 1978 most likely have lead.  You need to go to lead classes to learn the safest way to remove and dispose of lead in a home to prevent people from getting sick and hurting our enviroment.

It takes years to learn the most efficient and proper way to prep walls, trim, doors to make sure you get the best outcome.  The way you cut in a room matters, the kind of products you use.

All of this takes time and education.  You truly get what you pay for!

For some guidelines on how to hire the right house painting professional and what to look for, give us a call, we are happy to help you!  There are lots of house painters out there, but they are not all the same!

I hope this article Anyone Can Be A Painter But Not A Pro Painter, Branford Ct was helpful!

PAINTING KITCHEN CABINETS, PAINTERS IN GUILFORD CT

Painting your kitchen cabinets is a great way to give the entire kitchen a fresh, brand new look without breaking the bank! This is why we posted this article PAINTING KITCHEN CABINETS, PAINTERS IN GUILFORD CT to give you some tips about it.

First thing is to clean the cabinets inside and out using a gentle solution like TSP.  You want to make sure there is no dirt, dust and grease on the cabinets.  Let them dry out thoroughly.

Next, you want to protect areas that are not getting painted, so tape some Rosin paper over the counter tops and floor.  You can also tape plastic sheeting over the back splashes and windows if needed.   You will also need a work table for  the doors, drawers and shelves.

Remove the cabinets from the  frames, remove all the hardware.  Put hardware in safe place.  Place the cabinet doors on your work table.  Note:  Be sure to have a window or crack a door in the kitchen to allow fresh outside air inside.

Now, scrub all the face frames, the drawer fronts, doors and shelves with an abrasive pad that has liquid de-glosser on it.  Make sure that you have papers underneath to catch any extra liquid that will drip.  Before it dries, wipe away the residue with a clean de-glosser dampened rage.

If you are moving where the hardware is going to be put back on the doors and drawers, be sure to fill the holes with a two part polyester wood or autobody filler. It dries in pretty quick so make small batches of it. After it dries, you will need to scrape off any excess and then gently sand it so it’s flush with the wood surface.   Next sand all the surfaces using a 100 grit paper.  Make sure to dust off the dust, you can also use a tack cloth.

Choose a high quality primer, such as a oil based primer, they are good for maple, cherry or man made materials.  Use a good quality nylon-polyester brush.  Give it a good day to dry.  Sand the surfaces again using a orbit sander, 220 grit paper. It should be very smooth when you are done.

Next, you want to caulk any open seams using latex caulk.  After applying the caulk, smooth the seam with  a damp finger.  Fill any scratches, dents or dings using a vinyl spackle and smooth it flat with a putty knife.   After it dries, sand again.  Vacuum and clean all surfaces.

Working from top to bottom start painting across the grain.  Sand all the surfaces after the first coat dries with a 280 grit paper.  Vacuum and clean again.  Use a brand new brush for the final coat.  When it dries, you can hang everything back up!

PAGE HARDWARE REVIEW, GUILFORD CT

We are painting contractors in a wonderful small town – Guilford Ct and today I want to talk about a great hardware store right on our historic Guilford green, Page’s Hardware.  Page’s Hardware has been serving our community since 1939.

Page’s hardware has a great selection of paint brands and all the things you would need to paint.  But what Page’s hardware really excels at is service! When you walk in the door, you are immediately greeted, no matter if you enter from the front of the store or the back, you are given a friendly hello.  As you proceed in the store, within a few minutes you are approached by a friendly employee asking if you need any help.  Before you leave the store you will be approached and asked a few more times.  Not in an annoying way, but a quick, checking in with the customer to see if you need anything at all.

This is so refreshing and helpful!  If you go to a big box retailer, it’s as if you are in a dessert! Not an employee in sight!  It’s very difficult to get help, you have to walk a country mile around the store to find someone!

Page’s Hardware carries a wide variety of high quality products like housewares, cleansers, hardware, stoves, refrigerators, vacums and much, much more!

I highly recommend this store for any household needs!  You will come away from there wanting to go back!

If you have any questions about paint products or need some professional advice, please feel free to give us a call!  We are here for you! I hope this article PAGE HARDWARE REVIEW, GUILFORD CT was helpful!dave's photo

HOW TO CHOOSE EXTERIOR PAINT COLOR FOR YOUR HOME Madison Ct

The exterior color of your home is an expression of your personal style! Painting or staining your home is also the best way to protect your siding and trim from the elements.   How long a paint or stain job can protect your home totally depends on the quality of materials and how the materials are applied to the siding and trim.  We wrote this article HOW TO CHOOSE EXTERIOR PAINT COLOR FOR YOUR HOME Madison Ct  to help you with this.

There are some great LOW-VOC exterior stains and paints now available using new technology that stands the test of time and elements better then the brands that have been on the market for years! There is Aura exterior paint, Arborcoat waterborne exterior stain to name a few.

A few things to consider when picking an outside color:

1. Your driveway, the chimney and the roof should play a role in deciding a color. If you choose a color that has similar shades in the roof, chimney and driveway, it will add harmony to the entire property, and also give a feeling of spaciousness.

2. If you have stone work on the house or a stone fence, using a color that blends with the stone work will give a sense on continuity and beauty.

3. If your home is in the west coast where there are a lot of terra-cotta roofs, picking a soft neutral color will help even out the intense color of the terra-cotta and bring more visual harmony to the entire look and a softness.

4. If you belong in a community or houses that are close together, you might consider choosing a color palate that is compatible with the homes in your neighborhood.  The color does not need to be the same, just a color that goes with the general scheme in your area.

5.  Landscaping also has an impact on the overall look.  If you have a brilliant display of colors around the yard, you might go with a soft color to offset the beautiful intensity of the garden, or if you have a subdued garden, you can choose a louder house color!

6. I would encourage you to choose a white or very very light color for the trim.  Choosing a trim color that is different from the siding color can be tricky.  It can make your home look smaller and also force your eyes to just see the trim and not the entire home.

7. Use the doors as another way to add a pop of color to your home. It’s not such a big amount of color that it overtakes your home, it’s just enough to add a little fun and kick!

If you are meeting with a contractor, they should be able to give helpful tips.  It’s also a good idea to go to your local paint center and get a bunch of color choices and put them on the house so you can see the color throughout the day as the light changes.

If you would like any further help or have questions, please call us! We are happy to answer any questions you have, recommend a good paint store and products! Painting Contractor Westbrook Ct

Hiring a professional painting contractor can really take the stress out of painting your home, but how to choose the right one?  Getting a referral is a great start, but the contractor that is being referred to you by a well meaning friend or family member may have worked well for them, but might not suit you.  This is why I created this article “Painting Contractor Westbrook Ct” Lets get the technical issues out of the way right now in this article.  Here they are:

1. Make sure they have insurance

2. They must be a licensed contractor in Connecticut.  You can find out if they are licensed and what the status of the license is at: https://www.elicense.ct.gov/lookup/licenselookup.aspx

3. More then one way to get hold of them, such as cell phone, office phone and email.

4. A good website with detailed information about what they do and how they go about it.

5. Referrals at least 2-3

6. A clearly written detailed estimate of work to be performed with a time frame and cost.

Now, once you confirm all of the above lets get to the unspoken part of finding a contractor. I am writing this not as a painting contractor owner, but a consumer.

Say you call one of the highly recommended contractors that a friend or family member raved about, and you meet with him but you feel that you just don’t connect with him and the first thing you question to your self is “is it me”?  It most likely is not you, but a simple personality clash.

When I invite a contractor to my home, the most important thing for me is that I feel like I can talk to him/her.  I need to know that they want to talk about the job, not just the facts but about what kind of end result I am trying to accomplish. I need to feel that they are happy to be here and eager to work with me.  The contractor must be patient and let me talk.  It’s important that he asks questions, this implies that he is thinking about everything I am saying.  I need to know he understands me and I don’t want to feel like I am wasting his time or he is in a hurry to leave.

Once a contractor leaves, I look for an estimate in writing within 72 hours.  If I don’t get one, that’s a deal breaker for me.  Some people might say “he’s really busy, that’s a good sign, he must be so good” NOT TRUE!  What that means in my mind is he can’t keep up with his demand.  He doesn’t properly hire help to service the work load and bookings that he has, which means my future schedule with him can go right out the window!  If they are that busy then he should make that clear to me, and let me know that if he gets my job, when he can get to it.  I dont’ mind waiting, but I don’t want to be jerked around as if my schedule and life do not matter.

So, I hope this perspective helps! There’s a lot more to hiring a contractor then the obvious reasons!

If you have any questions after reading “Painting Contractor Westbrook Ct” please feel free to call us!  We are in Guilford Ct and are happy to call, email or visit you for a free professional painting evaluation / estimate!
