7 Professional Tips To Completing the Perfect Bathroom Paint Job

7 Tips on Painting Your Bathroom

Bathroom Painting in CTIn Connecticut, bathroom paint can be subject to extreme temperature and environmental changes, especially in late fall and winter.  It’s important to follow some guidelines to ensure your bathroom paint job turns out great.

When it comes to interior painting, your bathroom is in many ways no different to the bedroom, living room, hallway, kitchen, or other parts of the home. The same basic tips work for painting a bathroom along with all other parts of your house. However, there are a few differences that you will need to know so you can get the best results.

Naturally, you’ll want to use drop cloths to protect the floor, sink, and countertop and start by painting the ceiling first and working your way down. Another tip is using rollers for large sections of the wall and brushes to get around objects such as window sills, sinks, outlets, and so forth. Here are a few more tips that will help you paint your bathroom most efficiently, so it will look the way that you want.

Preparation: Naturally, you’ll want to decide on the colors of paint that you will use. Plus, you’ll want to purchase paints that are designed to hold up against the heat and humidity found in bathrooms.

Remove the Toilet: This will depend on if the toilet tank is next to the wall which makes it impossible to get behind without removal. While removing the toilet is a hassle, it’s also straightforward and can be done quickly so you can remove and replace in one day.

Cover Door, Window Trims, & Baseboard Moldings with Painter’s Tape: You can smooth down the tape with a putty knife, so the paint does not get underneath.

Remove All Decorations, Hangings, and Cover Electrical Outlets: This is what you do when painting any interior room. Simply take down what can be removed and cover the outlets and fixtures, so you can paint without worrying about touching things that you do not want to have painted.

Bathroom Painting in CTWork the Windows, Doors, Wall Switches, and Outlets First: Another standard piece of advice for interior painting, once you have completed the ceiling, paint the areas that you have covered in painter’s tape first to create a strong border and then work your way around the room in a single direction.

Use Primer on Walls for brighter paints: If you are looking to brighten up your bathroom, paint the dark walls with a bright primer first before applying the color that you want on top. This will help create a brighter appearance for your bathroom.

When painting your bathroom, you’ll want to use at least two coats, which means painting the first coat and letting it dry before you add the second. If you are painting the ceiling, it will need two coats applied and the paint to dry before you start on the rest of the room. It also means when starting on one side of the room for your first coat, do the same for your second coat.

You’ll find that painting your bathroom is not really all that different compared to painting any other room in your home. If you follow the steps, you should get the results you want with a little time and effort.

While painting a bathroom is similar to painting most rooms in your home there may be some challenges that you would not face otherwise.  The plumbing and bathroom fixtures may need to be worked around or moved.  There may be tile in parts of your bathroom.  And not having access to the bathroom for an extended period of time for a family can prove to be a huge hassle.  It’s best to hire a professional interior painter in CT who can get the job done quickly and efficiently.

Four Questions to Ask When Hiring an Exterior Home Painter

Home Painters in New Haven County CT What Should You Look For When Hiring A Painter To Paint The Exterior Of Your Home in Connecticut?

Painting the exterior of your home is a tough task especially with the constantly changing weather on the shoreline of Connecticut. It’s a good idea to know what qualities to look for in a painter when choosing a painting contractor for the outside of your home.  Choosing a quality exterior home painter will save you money and beautify your home for years to come. As a homeowner, it’s important to know what to look for when searching for an exterior home painter.

Exterior painting should be done by an experienced, licensed and fully insured painter. It’s important for a homeowner to practice due diligence when selecting a qualified home painter in New Haven County.

Here Are Four Important Tips to Help Choose a Qualified Home Painter

Competence

One of the most important things to look for in painter is competence. Are they capable of doing the job? Do they have the right skill set to do it? Do they have the know-how to complete the job in a timely manner? Can they answer all your questions honestly? You should interview the painter to make sure they are capable of handling the painting of the exterior of your home. You should also ask for past projects similar to yours along with references from those past paint jobs. A qualified and experienced painting company will be happy to supply you with references from similar paint jobs.

Coastline Painters painting the exterior of a home in Guilford CTExperience

Nothing beats a home painting company who has many years of experience of painting houses and commercial properties. In looking for a paint contractor to paint the exterior of your home, you should make sure they have at least several years of experience painting other home exteriors along the shoreline of Connecticut. There is a huge difference between painting the interior of a home and painting the exterior of a home. An experienced painter knows the most cost effective way to paint the exterior of your home, what type of paint to use based on the material used on the exterior of your home, what tools will be necessary and approximately how long the paint job will take. The painting company’s experience will help you sleep better at night knowing that you have hired the right painting team for the job.

Reputation

Aside from the skills the painter has, it would be wise to know if they have a good reputation. As mentioned earlier asking for references that you can contact will help you determine whether or not the painting company you are interviewing has a positive reputation.  Your neighbors in Guilford & surrounding communities will undoubtedly provide you with feedback about the painting contractor you are interviewing. You can also search their website, Google, Yelp, and Facebook for reviews from previous exterior painting clients.

Insurance
Accidents happen but that should not be your problem to deal with. Your painter should have insurance to cover accidents and injuries on the job.  If they don’t and one of their employees gets hurt on the job you’re home owners insurance will have to cover it.  If the insurance is not enough you could be on the hook for hospital bills, lost wages and more.  It is very important to not only ask if they have the proper coverage but to ask for proof of coverage.  Having the proper insurance and license also shows the level of commitment a painting business has.  Not having proper coverage just means the business is not concerned for their clients.   The last thing any homeowner wants to deal with is someone else’s hospital bills or a potential lawsuit.

Finished Home Paint Job in Guilford CTIn Conclusion

Painting the exterior part of your house takes skilled professional painters. You should practice your due diligence when it comes to hiring the best painting company to complete the job of painting the exterior of your home in an efficient manner. In doing so you will save yourself money over the long haul because the job is done right the first time, and you will finish with your home looking as good as new.  You can rest easier knowing a professional team of painters is treating your home the same way you would.

The Importance Of Cleaning Exterior of Your Home By House Painter In Madison Ct

With spring around the corner and it’s a great time to walk around the outside of your home and access what needs to be done.  I guarantee that most of us have homes that could use a good cleaning due to dirt, mildew and residue from leaves etc.. that is why I created this blog “The Importance Of Cleaning Exterior Of Your Home By House Painter In Madison Ct”  to give a few valuable tips weather you are doing the cleaning your self or hiring someone to do it for you!

If you are hiring a professional to do it here is a link to an earlier blog I did on what to look for when hiring a contactor of any trade: http://coastlinepainters.com/uncategorized/painting-contractor-westbrook-ct/

When your home is left with dirt on it, the effects can pile up quickly, dirt and mildew reduce the life of your paint job and eat through just about anything.  Once the paint starts chipping and peeling then the outside elements have direct contact with the wood on your house and can cause moisture, which can cause wood rot.    Your beautiful home now looks tired and run down.

What’s the solution?  Power wash your home at least every two years!  A lot of people and professionals use basic bleach.  If you don’t want harsh chemical’s around your home, you can opt to use a eco friendly product! Be careful here though, if a “green” cleaning product says it’s “all natural” or “green” that doesn’t mean it doesn’t contain harsh chemical’s.  Green cleaning is not regulated by any goverment agency, anyone can advertise their products as green and they really are not!  Try to find a “Green Seal Certified” house cleaner they have great standards!  Simple Green offers a great line of products, or ask at your local paint store!   If you have used a professional house painter in the past, ask them, or go to a paint store and ask there.

I hope this blog ” The Importance Of Cleaning Exterior Of Your Home By House Painter In Madison Ct” was helpful!  We are professional house painters in Guilford Ct and we serve the entire shoreline area!  Please feel free to call us with any questions, we are very happy to help!

3 Common House Painting Mistakes You Don’t Want To Make, By Painter In Madison Ct

Whether you’re planning on painting a bedroom, your favorite piece of furniture, or the crown moulding that you can’t stand the color of, we’re here to help. We know many homeowners like to paint around their homes themselves, even though it can seem like a big project to take on. If you’re one of these people, we’re sure you can relate to these 3 common painting mistakes, this is why we created this blog “3 Common House Painting Mistakes You Don’t Want To Make, By Painter In Madison Ct

1.Buying the least expensive paint and brushes

Typically, when someone wants to begin painting a room or multiple rooms throughout their house, the first thing that comes to mind is – how much is this going to cost me? So, in an effort to save money and make the DIY project cost-effective, they’ll reach for the cheapest paint and least expensive paint brushes. While you may not notice an immediate difference, you’ll probably end up paying an additional price somehow. Some lesser expensive paints require multiple coats to be able to cover an area that a higher quality paint could. While others, can be extremely difficult to clean off of surfaces (you know, on the off-chance you make a mistake and spill or drop a little paint on the floor). Professional house painters usually will invest in high quality products!

According to professional house painters for interior house painting or exterior house painting, if you want to test to quality of your paint, look at its thickness. It’s a safe bet to avoid “generic” branded paints.

 2.Combining latex and oil-based products

Many people think you can combine latex and oil-based paint, so they won’t bother to correctly prime their walls. However, if you have oil-based paint on the area that you’re currently wanting to paint, it’s not a good idea to apply latex-based paint directly on top of it. Surprisingly, the reverse (oil on latex) doesn’t cause any issues, though, so we can see the confusion. But, once you’ve applied latex on top of oil, it becomes extremely difficult to remove. It’s likely you’ll have to sand or scrape it off of the area.  Again, another secret that interior and exterior house painters and painting contractors know.

To prevent this from happening – prime your walls first with a latex-based “conversion” primer. It will help the latex-based paint to sit on the area without being nearly impossible to remove. No sanding or scraping for you today!

3.Choosing the wrong finish for the wrong room

Different rooms around your house will have different levels of traffic. It’s important to think of this when you’re choosing the finish for your paint because a “flat” paint is much harder to clean than a paint that has a “Eggshell” Matte” “semi gloss” or “high gloss” finish when painting your home.

The finishes range from flat to high gloss and measure how “shiny” the paint will be on the walls. Interior house paints that are glossier tend to be easier to clean, making them perfect for high-traffic rooms like the kids playroom (aren’t you sick of trying to clean those walls?).  A professional house painter will be sure to ask his customer about finishes that best suit their home when house painting.

Next time you need to choose a interior house paint color, keep in mind how often you may be needing to clean something off of the area it’s going on. If the answer is likely never – go for a flat paint. If it’s pretty often, you know what to do!

Best Time To Paint Interior, Guilford Ct

There are several good reasons to paint your home in the late fall and winter months!  Some people don’t want to because of the odor and fumes.  Luckily, there are great solutions to these issues!  This is why I created this blog “Best Time To Paint Interior, Guilford Ct”

One good reason is the cost, in the late fall months and the winter months many painting contractors slow down, they are looking to fill schedules for work!  What does this mean to you?  A discounted price! When we are busy, we are not going to discount work, but when there  is a need we will do what we can to secure you as a long term customer!

We have been house painters, painting contractors in the Guilford Ct area, the Madison Ct area and up and down the shoreline for many years and we are always offering great coupons on seasonal work to book it as early as possible! So when should you start looking for a house painter for interior painting in the late fall and winter months?? Believe it or not, start in August and September!  Why not?  You get a great price and by booking an interior house painter early, you get priority booking!  This matters, especially if you are planning a nice winter vacation get away, or if you have company coming!

But more importantly we care about our customers, and a lot has changed in the painting industry since we started house painting in Branford Ct many years ago! When we started out in the mid 70’s there was not a lot of information about VOC’s.  Now, there is so many websites and places that provide free information about this.  We want to give our customer’s not just a great interior paint job, but the healthiest way to do it! That means paying attention to what’s in the paint!

Now that all said, some people will say “the house smells and we can’t open the windows because it’s cold outside”!  Well, there have been a lot of improvements over the years with paints.  I remember for many years, when we would paint inside, the customer would smell it for days!  Even long after it dried, you would walk in the house and all you could smell was the paint as if we had just put it on!  NO MORE!

Benjamin Moore has a line of paint that is called Natura Waterborne Zero-Voc and Zero Emissions Paint !  This product line was created by Benjamin Moore to provide the most eviromentally friendly paint, it is not only a zero VOC paint, it offers absolutely NO EMISSIONS!  Which means no smell, no inhaling harmful chemicals long after the paint dries!  Consumers think that because the paint is dry and you can’t smell it any longer that it’s not putting out harmful Emissions, this couldn’t be further from the truth!  This is why when you decide to paint the interior of your home using a professional house painter in your area or a house painter in Guilford Ct you need to request the NO VOC and Zero Emissions paint.

The initials VOC stand for Volatile Organic Compounds, these compounds are a large group of carbon-based chemicals.  these compounds have been linked to respiratory illnesses!  There is a misconception that if you can’t smell the paint, then there are no VOC’s, there is paint that has VOC’s and they have no odor!

VOC levels indoors are usually about five times higher then outdoors.  When studies have been done focusing on the effect that VOC’s have on our health they take into consideration they have found that low levels over a long period of time can cause many harmful health outcomes such as:

Headaches, Nose irritation, eye irritation, Nausea, Vomiting, dizziness, asthma symptoms can become worse.  Long term exposure to high levels of VOC’s can increase the risk of:  Cancer, liver damage, kidney damage and central nervous system damage. I don’t want to freak you out, but it’s always good to get a broad spectrum of understanding of this product.

There are a lot of good websites out there that help educate the public about VOC’s and air pollution that we breathe in our homes and ways to reduce it. This can feel daunting, but small steps add up to big ones!

Unfortunately there are many places in our home that has VOC’s such as carpets, glues, sealing caulks, vinyl floors, upholstery fabrics, varnishes and many more.  So, whenever you can, reduce this chemical outpouring by investigating what you are buying, installing or applying and see if there are other variations without the harmful VOC’s.  Every little step helps, especially the paint on the walls!

We are painters in Guilford Ct and right next store to our little town is another great town called Branford Ct.  We go to Ring’s End there as oftern as possible because they carry high quality products and the staff is very knowledgeable!  Their NO VOC paint line is called Nautra Zero and Zero Emissions Paint.  It cost a little bit more then the paint with the harmful chemicals, but when your health and your families health is at risk, cost is not the point!

Here is a great link to Benjamin Moore site with great information about this paint:

http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/for-your-home/product-catalog?prod=Natura_Waterborne_Interior_Paint#piSheen=512&tab=2

Here’s another thought that has nothing to do with house painting but everything to do with your family’s  health, what about the arts and crafts paints that you and your children use?? Is is non VOC ? Don’t assume it is, be sure to check it out. I came across a great article when I was researching this article and I never ever thought that there might be VOC in paints that we give our children to play with, or paint that would have it.  Here is a link to a website that I found this on and I thought that it was very interesting.

http://www.networx.com/article/enjoy-good-healthy-fun-with-no-voc-paint

So, as you can see, there is a lot of areas in our homes and lives that have chemicals, and any little step we can take to slowly start eliminating them really adds us.  It goes far beyond hiring an interior painting contractor, guilford ct to help eliminate this stuff.  I have two kids, my son is 28 and my daughter is 25 and I shudder to think of the many times when they were little we played with play dough and paints and my daughter loved to chew on play dough!  I know it sounds gross, but that was her thing no matter how many times I asked her not to!  Now after reading about toxic chemicals in the arts and crafts products, what was my daughter actually putting in her mouth??   Also, I must apologize for having to sprinkle the phrases ” paint interior, Guilford Ct” and “Paint interior, Madison Ct”  I have to do this during this blog so that the search engines pick up my article and rank it so you can see it.   We are putting out regular blogs about all kinds of stuff that helps improve our lives.

Like I said earlier in the article we have been painters for many many years and our customers always call us when they have painting needs.  We have become fond of our customers and we do care.  Of course we want to give a high quality job in a timely manner, but now we want to make sure it’s a healthy one as well.

Here is a link to another Eco friendly paint company,  I copied a paragraph from their front page website, I will post a link below to their website so you can check them out as well.

OUR PETS’ HEALTH!!!

Here is another interesting post from the above Eco website, it’s about our pets!

Why do pets need special paint?

Everybody knows that pets can be much more sensitive to smells, chemicals and pollutants than human beings are. But, it is not only our pets’ ability to detect these chemicals that makes them more sensitive, the fact that they are generally smaller than humans makes them more likely to suffer serious health issues as a consequence of exposure.
Traditional paints contain a cocktail of harmful chemicals, solvents and VOCs. We notice them as odors, but many of them do not smell and these pollutants can off gas from paint for several years. For animals, this problem is doubled, because they are in the habit of actively sniffing their environment and even licking, biting and chewing things that we would never put in our mouths. As a result, pets actively ingest the harmful chemicals that normally remain on walls, floors and doors.

Wow!!! I am an animal lover! I have an English Mastiff that is only two years old and weigh’s about 200lbs right now, and he feels that it’s his main priority in life to lick anything on the floor and sniff anything at all!!! This is really making me realize I need to also re-think my floors. We are going to sand and refinish them this winter, but I  think this article has made me realize I need to do some research on hardwood floor stains, and clear coats and see if I can find ones that have no harmful chemical’s.  One sec, I am going to check this out and post what I find below.

Good news! The above company offers healthy stains!  Let’s see if I can find another website.

Benjamin Moore also offers floor stain with No VOC

This is really amazing and I bet if we dig further we could find all kinds of ways to eliminate toxic chemicals from our home. I would imagine that it’s in our carpets and furniture as well!

Here is a link to a green carpet company that explains what’s in our carpets:

http://greenandhealthy.info/toxiccarpeting.html

Here is an excerpt from the website about new carpets:

  • Contain toluene, benzene, formaldehyde, ethyl benzene, styrene, acetone and a host of other chemicals that are known carcinogens and produce fetal abnormalities in test animals. These chemicals also cause hallucinations, nerve damage and respiratory illness in humans. Please refer to this article: “Toxic Emissions from New Carpets

I would suggest visiting this website and also doing some searching on your own about the toxins in our carpets.  Here is a link to another website that gives instructions and tips on how to clean your carpets without harmful chemicals:

http://www.healthychild.org/easy-steps/clean-carpets-without-dangerous-chemicals/

When I think about when my children were toddlers crawling around on my carpet, leaving a snack on the carpet, I shudder!  But for most of us  we did then what we knew then, when we knew better we did better!  I think that’s the best way to look at it!  I never even thought about chemical’s in my carpets when I remodeled my house 26 years ago!  Well, at least moving forward I can look at things with fresh eyes and make sure that I try to find solutions that are the healthiest when purchasing items and products for my home.   I would love to write another blog about the food we choose to eat, since I became a vegetarian accidentally almost 4 years ago, and how my health has improved on a steady basis.  I will save that for my personal blog.

I hope that that this blog “Best Time To Paint Interior, Guilford Ct” has been really helpful. I started out just wanting to inform my customers about a non toxic no VOC and no emissions paint that is available, and through that it has lead to all the other areas in our home that are just as harmful! Truly informative for me.  Thank you for taking the time to read this blog “Best Time To Paint Interior, Guilford Ct”  I hope it is most usefull!  Please know that if you have any questions you can always reach us at 203-458-2073 or email me or Dave at coastlinepaintersllc@comcast.net

There are several ways to accomplish this, for interior work the best time to call is in January, this is  when things get slower then other parts of the year, you can have the work booked for that month if the contractor has time, or you can ask to have it scheduled for Feb or March.

Another way is to have the estimate done in the summer or fall and ask to be put on the schedule in the winter months, you should get a discounted price because this is when things are slower and contractors are looking for work, ask for a winter discount for booking now.

We have been painting houses in Guilford Ct, painting houses in Madison Ct and done all kinds of house painting from New Haven Ct to Old Saybrook Ct.  If you need any advice about how to paint a house in Ct just call us, we are happy to help!
